Every muscle you tap starts a clock. How long that clock runs depends on which muscle it is and how long you have been training, because a quad taking heavy eccentric loading is on a different schedule from a forearm, and a beginner repairs slower than someone with years of the same stimulus behind them.
The windows come from the exercise science on how long trained muscle takes to return to baseline. Muscle protein synthesis stays elevated for roughly a day to two after a session and longer in less trained lifters, which is the finding behind the familiar advice to leave 48 to 72 hours before hitting a large muscle group hard again.
Ready here means 80 percent recovered rather than fully. That is the threshold Workout With Me uses before it will schedule a muscle again, and it is deliberately short of complete: the last stretch toward 100 percent buys very little and costs a training day.

Almost always yes, but not the same thing you trained yesterday. That is the answer the question usually deserves, and it is why the tool above gives you a verdict per muscle rather than one for your whole body.
A rest day and a day off are different things. If your chest is still recovering, your legs are not, and training them is not stealing recovery from your chest in any way that matters at normal training volumes. Whole body rest matters too, but it is a weekly consideration, not a daily veto.
The exception worth taking seriously is systemic fatigue: several days of poor sleep, a stretch of very high volume, or coming back from illness. Those are body wide and no muscle map will show them. If everything feels heavy and nothing is sore, that is the signal.
The same clock, read at different points. Find how long ago you trained down the left and your muscle across the top.
The spread is the useful part. Twenty four hours after a session, your abs are ready and your lower back is barely a third of the way back. Anyone training on a fixed schedule regardless of muscle is over resting some of them and under resting others.

Separate from the per muscle question is a floor on how often you train full stop. Newer lifters carry a minimum gap between sessions because recovery is systemic as well as local, and it disappears with training age as work capacity catches up.
That is why the answer to how many days a week you should train is not a number so much as a consequence. Pick a split, respect the per muscle windows, and the days per week falls out of it.

The minimum gap is a floor under the whole body, not per muscle: it exists because newer lifters recover systemically as well as locally, and a rest day does more than let one muscle repair. It disappears at advanced level, where the per-muscle windows are doing the limiting instead.
This is what a split is for. If you trained push yesterday, your chest, front delts and triceps are on a clock and your back, biceps and legs are not. Pull today, legs tomorrow, and by the time push comes round again everything on it has cleared.
It also means an unplanned rest day is rarely necessary. When the muscles you wanted to train are not ready, there is almost always a category that is, and doing it beats skipping the session and losing the habit.
Sharp or joint pain rather than muscle soreness, illness with a fever, or a stretch of days where every weight feels heavier than it should. The first two are obvious. The third is the one people push through and should not, because it usually means accumulated fatigue that a single hard session will deepen rather than resolve.
Soreness on its own is not on that list. It tracks how unfamiliar the movement was more than how much damage it did, and it peaks around a day and a half in, often after your strength has already come back.

A recovery check asks which muscles are ready to be trained again, rather than whether you should train at all. It compares how long ago each muscle was worked against the window that muscle needs, given its size and your training experience, and reports what has cleared.
Most trained lifters grow on ten to twenty hard sets per muscle per week, and a workout planner only delivers that volume when it schedules sessions around which muscles have recovered.
Usually yes. Soreness tracks how unfamiliar the movement was more than how much damage it caused, and it peaks around 36 hours in, often after your ability to produce force has already recovered. If the muscle can move its normal weight for its normal reps, it is ready. If soreness is severe enough to change your technique, train something else.
For small muscles that clear inside a day, no. For quads, hamstrings or the lower back it usually is, because the second session lands before the first has been repaired and adds damage instead of stimulus. If you want a muscle more often than its window allows, make each session easier rather than ignoring the window.
True overtraining is rare and takes months. What most people have is accumulated fatigue: weights that used to move now grind, sleep gets worse, motivation drops, and soreness lingers longer than it did. The fix is a deload week, not a day off, and it works quickly once you actually take it.
Train, but lower the bar. Strength drops measurably after a bad night and your judgement of effort drops with it, so a session you would normally call RPE 8 lands at 9 or 10. Keep the movements, drop the load, skip the top sets. It keeps the habit without digging a hole.
It depends on your split more than on a number. If each session hits different muscles, you can train several days in a row while every individual muscle still gets its window. Beginners generally do best on two or three training days, which also leaves room for the sleep the repair actually depends on.
