Dr. Muscle might be the most research-heavy app in the algorithmic training space, and it's also the most expensive one I know of. Both facts matter for this comparison, so let's take Dr. Muscle vs Workout With Me from the top, and I'll be upfront about where they've done real work.
The app auto-generates your training and progresses it using ideas with genuine research pedigree: daily undulating periodization, effort-based autoregulation, and volume landmarks that decide when you need more sets and when you need a break. Do the yearly math before you commit, because monthly numbers hide it. A year of Dr. Muscle runs close to six hundred dollars, which is real coaching money in many gyms, and it buys software that will never watch you lift. I'm not saying software can't be worth that. I'm saying the comparison you should price it against isn't other apps anymore, it's a human.
The onboarding also assumes a lot. Reviewers keep describing the experience as built for someone who already speaks the language of periodization, which makes the "we handle everything for you" pitch land strangely for the beginners it's priced like a service for.
My real critique is about timing, and it's a design choice, not a bug.
Dr. Muscle's autoregulation is reactive. The engine finds out something is wrong when your performance drops: you miss reps, it recalculates, the next session adjusts. That's genuinely better than a static spreadsheet that never notices you at all. But think about what it means. The system's first signal that you were under-recovered is a failed session. You had to walk into the gym, burn a workout, and grind out bad sets for the algorithm to learn what your body knew that morning.
A failed session isn't just data. It's a cost. It's the interrupted repair I keep writing about in our recovery-based training material: training a muscle that isn't rebuilt yet doesn't stack a new stimulus, it interrupts the one in progress. An engine that learns about recovery from your failures pays for its education with your training time.
There's a transparency gap too. The adjustments arrive, the weights change, but the reasoning stays inside the engine. You see the output of the recalculation, not the state of your body that produced it.
Zoom out from a single failed session and count the cost over a training year, because reactive systems bill you slowly.
Say your recovery dips genuinely out of sync with your training maybe once every couple of weeks. Bad sleep stretch, work crunch, a weekend of sport. Each time, a reactive engine needs a below-par session to notice, then a session or two of recalibrated training to correct course. Call it one partially wasted session per incident, and you're looking at twenty-plus compromised sessions a year, each one also carrying the interrupted-repair cost underneath it. No single incident feels like a problem. The sum is a visible chunk of a year's potential progress, spent teaching your app things your body already knew.
There's a second-order cost too: the recalculation itself learns from corrupted data. When you underperform because you were under-recovered, the engine can't tell weakness from tiredness. It just sees lower numbers and adjusts your future prescriptions to match, sometimes downward, when the honest reading was that the session shouldn't have happened yet at all. A model that reacts to performance without modeling recovery doesn't only respond late. It occasionally responds to the wrong thing entirely.
Workout With Me's bet is that recovery should be modeled before the session, not deduced after it.
Every workout you log feeds a colour-coded body map, 6 muscle categories broken into 19 subcategories, each labeled CRUSHED, IN RECOVERY, or RECOVERED with a percentage and the time left. One more honest note. Dr. Muscle's website reviews its competitors and, unsurprisingly, tends to rank Dr. Muscle first. I'm obviously a biased party too, this is my blog. The difference I'll claim is that I've kept every criticism here to documented facts and reported user experience, and I've told you plainly what their app does well. Read both sides skeptically and check the claims. That's how you should read every comparison, including this one.

If you're an experienced lifter who wants a hands-off engine with serious research behind it, doesn't mind opaque adjustments, and the price genuinely doesn't sting, Dr. Muscle will train you competently. That's the truth.
