Here's an uncomfortable fact about the AI training boom. Almost every algorithmic workout app can tell you what to lift. Almost none of them can tell you whether your body is ready to lift it.
That's backwards. Muscle isn't built during the workout. The session is the stimulus, and the growth happens in the days after, while the muscle repairs. Which means the single most important question a training algorithm can answer isn't "what's the optimal exercise?" It's "what are you actually recovered enough to train today?" I want to walk through what the big apps actually track, because once you see it, you can't unsee it.
I've spent a lot of time reading the documentation of the major training apps, partly out of professional curiosity and partly because I built a competing engine. Here's the honest summary of their recovery inputs.
Fitbod calculates a recovery percentage per muscle group, which sounds great, until you read its help pages and realize the input is the sets you logged in the app. Nothing else. Not your sleep, not your stress, not the pickup game you played on Sunday.
JuggernautAI, the powerlifting coach app, runs on your self-reported effort ratings. After your sets you rate how hard they felt, and the system adjusts future training. Smart design, but it means the model only knows what you tell it, and it has no sync with your phone's health data to catch what you don't.
Freeletics adapts its bodyweight sessions from your self-reported ratings too, and says plainly that wearable data isn't part of the equation. Alpha Progression, a genuinely solid German progression app, tracks your performance per set and progresses you week to week, but has no per-muscle fatigue model at all. If the numbers went up, you must be fine.
Notice the pattern. Recovery, when it appears at all, is either a hidden score computed from logged sets or a survey question. It's an input to be estimated, not a state to be respected.
Let me be fair, because one company takes this seriously. The RP Hypertrophy app, built on Renaissance Periodization's methodology, asks you detailed questions about soreness, pump, and how disrupted you felt after training, and it genuinely adjusts your volume from the answers. Reviewers mostly complain about the price and the jargon, not the logic. If you're a volume nerd who loves spreadsheets, it's the serious alternative in this space, and I'd rather tell you that than pretend it doesn't exist.
But even there, recovery is something the app asks about. It's feedback for next week's plan. It still isn't the thing the plan is built around.
You might be thinking: fine, the apps estimate recovery loosely, how much does that really matter?
It matters more than almost anything else, and here's the simple version of why. Training a muscle that hasn't recovered doesn't add a stimulus on top of the last one. It interrupts the repair process that was about to make you stronger. You show up, grind through sets at maybe 80 percent of your normal weights, feel terrible, and walk out having mostly dug the hole deeper. Two mediocre chest sessions in a week build less than one great one at full capacity.
The reverse mistake is quieter but just as expensive. Wait too long and the muscle has already finished adapting; you're leaving free growth on the table. Good timing isn't a nice extra. Timing is most of the game, and research on training frequency keeps circling the same idea: hit each muscle again when it's rebuilt, not before, not long after.
An algorithm that can't see recovery accurately can't time anything. It's a chef who can't taste.
Abstract arguments are easy to shrug off, so let me make it concrete. Here's a completely ordinary week, and what a logged-sets-only algorithm believes about it.
Monday, you train legs hard and log everything. The model marks your legs down and starts counting them back up. Tuesday, work explodes and you sleep five hours. Wednesday, same. The model sees nothing, recovery keeps ticking up on schedule. Thursday, a friend drags you to a football match, ninety minutes of sprinting the app never hears about. Friday morning, the algorithm cheerfully reports your legs at a healthy percentage and builds you a squat session.
Every number in that model is internally consistent, and every number is wrong. Your actual Friday legs are carrying two short nights and a full match on top of Monday's training. You'll feel it on the second warmup set. The app will never know, and worse, when your squat numbers come in low, some algorithms will read that as weakness and adjust your future loads down, learning exactly the wrong lesson from data it misunderstood.
Multiply that week by a year and you get the quiet tax most lifters pay without knowing: sessions that interrupt repair instead of stacking growth, plans calibrated to a body that only exists in the log. Nothing dramatic ever goes wrong. Progress is just slower than it should be, forever.
So what would it look like if an app treated recovery as the number one input instead of an afterthought? I can tell you, because that's the design bet behind Workout With Me's S.H.A.R.P engine, and everything else on our recovery-based training hub.

Second, recovery gets veto power. The engine will not schedule a muscle until it's at least 80 percent recovered. Not "prefers fresher muscles." Won't. That single rule is the difference between recovery as a suggestion and recovery as the decider.
Third, and this is the part I'm proudest of, the model accepts corrections. No app can see the football match you played or the session you logged somewhere else. So you tap those muscles on the body map, mark them as crushed, and the engine plans around them exactly as if it had tracked every rep. The model being wrong stops being a dead end and becomes a two second fix.
Next time you're evaluating an AI workout app, skip the marketing page and ask one question: when this thing is wrong about my recovery, how do I find out, and how do I fix it?
For most apps the honest answer is you don't, and you can't. The score is hidden, the inputs are narrow, and your only move is to trust it or quit.
I think you deserve better than trust. Your recovery state should be visible, it should drive the plan rather than decorate it, and you should be able to correct it in two taps when real life happens.
